 In Memoriam: Jay Dalehite (1930–2025)

“The Mayor of Canyon Creek”

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Jay Dalehite, a beloved and long-standing member of the Canyon Creek community, who passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 94.

Jay and his family moved to Canyon Creek in 1973, and for more than 50 years, he has been a pillar of leadership, service, and spirit in both our neighborhood and the greater Richardson community. Affectionately known as “The Mayor of Canyon Creek,” Jay was a tireless advocate for civic engagement and community development.

Jay served the Canyon Creek Homeowners Association with dedication and integrity, including 15 years as President. His contributions are woven into the very fabric of our neighborhood—from the creation of the CCHOA Flag Program and development of the HOA by-laws to the annual resident directory and the painting of curb numbers for all 2,850 homes in Canyon Creek.

Equally impactful was his decades-long commitment to the Boy Scouts, including over 40 years of service. He was Cubmaster of Pack 262, Pack Committee Chairman, Unit Commissioner, and Assistant District Commissioner on the District level. He was also a Silver Beaver Award recipient, the highest award the Circle Ten Council Boy Scouts could present.

Beyond Canyon Creek, Jay was a 2020 recipient of the Richardson Real Heroes award and an active alum of Leadership Richardson, the Richardson Citizens Police Academy, and the Richardson Citizens Fire Academy. He served on the boards of Animal Luv, the City of Richardson Sign Board, and our own HOA, always leading with humility and a servant’s heart.

He is survived by his beloved wife Sandy, five children—Debbie Leyva of Los Angeles, California; Jess Dalehite of Midland, Texas; Sylvia Collins of Los Angeles, California; Jeff Dalehite of Richardson; and Mike Dalehite of Plano—along with 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Jay’s legacy is one of service, leadership, and love for community. His presence will be sorely missed, but his impact will live on in every flag flown, every scout mentored, and every neighbor who calls Canyon Creek home.

With gratitude,

The Canyon Creek Homeowners Association

A neighborhood we're proud to call home.

Welcome to the heart of North Texas: our tight-knit neighborhood, a hidden gem nestled within nature's embrace. Home to over 2,500 families, our community exudes a charming, old-fashioned vibe reminiscent of the 60s and 70s.

Imagine friendly neighbors who greet you on morning walks, children laughing in the streets, and vibrant July 4th parades that bring everyone together.

Unlike typical suburban areas, we cherish genuine connections. With a serene creek and towering trees, our neighborhood offers a unique natural beauty rarely found in Texas. You'll also find the convenience of a private golf course, walkable streets, and a variety of local restaurants and shops just a golf cart ride away.

Situated just 15 minutes from downtown Dallas and in close proximity to major highways, accessibility is a breeze. Our community is enriched by the presence of University of Texas at Dallas professors and grad students, and our thriving neighborhood is recognized as a beacon of engagement and leadership by city officials.

Here, every home is part of something truly special.
